HBI-DC Executive Director Jane Pan gave a riveting acceptance speech at the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable 10th Anniversary Gala on Thurs., Sept. 19, 2013. Through the use of NVHR's slogan, "Viral hepatitis is a winnable battle," Jane emphasized the need for collaboration among organizations in order to unite the community against this deadly disease.
HBI-DC conducted hepatitis B and C screenings and hepatitis B vaccinations for the Burmese community in Gaithersburg, MD at the Mizo Presbyterian Church on Sunday, September 22. With two volunteer doctors and six volunteer assistants, all of whom speak Burmese, HBI-DC screened 38 participants throughout the afternoon as faith services ended. Our partner doctors consulted participants while our other volunteers assisted participants with completing the forms.
Many of the participants seemed eager to get tested. The atmosphere was bubbling with lively chatter; not once did the room become silent or quiet. It was great that Burmese food was served to churchgoers after services. Many participants ate a meal before their screening. All of the men and women stood in line patiently as the queue steadily increased. All in all, everything went very smoothly and we can’t wait for our next screening.
